Topic: Lied about Salary Range. What now?

I applied for a position. The HR person phoned me back to set up an interview. Since I already have a job, I wanted to get a "range" before we proceeded not to waste each others time. I was told by the HR person the range was "80-85k". So I set up the interview.

Fast forward two weeks and I got a call for an offer. They phoned me while I was at work so I could not get into details but their offer was 68k.  This is a position in NYC, so it would be at least a 1 1/2-2 hour commute each way. I am going to go back to them with a counter offer, but am debating how I should proceed.

Should I mention the 80-85k they told me in the beginning? Thanks!

Re: Lied about Salary Range. What now?

Before you counter-offer, you need to find out if their offer is negotiable or not.  The better course of action is to talk with the same person who told you the $80 to $85K range and say something like, "I was anticipating an offer closer to the salary range you mentioned for the position.  Is your initial salary offer negotiable?"  Then see what sort of response you get.  If the salary offer isn't negotiable, then it's up to you to either decline it and keep looking or accept it.  If the offer is negotiable, and if you're asked what salary you have in mind, I'd counter with a range.  Say something like, "Based on the salary range for the position, I was antlicipating an offer in the $X to $Y range," and see what sort of reaction you receive.  But if you do that, you also need to be fully prepared to explain why the JOB will be worth that much more to the employer based on how well your experience, training, skills, past job performance, and education match the requirements of the job.  The bottom line is don't assume the offer is negotiable.  Ask if it is first!  Make sense?

i think you should mention the first offer which was 80-85 k..who offer you that amount? then ask that particular person and reminded him/her about their previous offer..
